The Tongue
Revelation Article

…David, in his desire to please God said, I will keep my mouth with a bridle while the wicked is before me. Because the tongue is quick and pretentiously lively, the more apt we should be to take care to govern it as was David, the man after God’s own heart. The mere boasting of men may seem to some as a great but harmless matter, yet what is contrived out of the mouth can wreak havoc and a fire that erupts as combustible matter in ablaze. Haughty and vile words have brought oppression to nations. Wars and broken covenants have erupted because of unrestrained tongues. Cold seeded threats and heart shattering words have the capacity to destroy entire families that were blind sided by false and irrevocable accusations.

Blistering words that are unleashed by a scorned woman on the eve of her wedding day are released by way of the tongue. The result of course jesting and joking gets out of hand on the back porch. A family gathering has now transformed into strife between two brothers who once shared the simplest of things. As a result of the pain of their words they now enter into their tenth anniversary with not one word to speak to one another. What a tremendous inferno the tongue can produce.

Imagine a tossed lit match plummeting into a field of dry grass in the midst of a scorching summer day. What damage it could cause as the field becomes engulfed in fire. Mothers grabbing their children trying to outrun flames that are wild and unsusceptible to tears and frantic screams. Fathers who race desperately to salvage their homes as they snatch tangible memories from smoke filled rooms. Oh! But when the damage is done, all that is left are pillars of curving darkness in the wind. Oh! What a disaster the tongue can produce.

There is such an abundance of sin in the tongue that it is by no means a coincidence that the tongue is called a world of iniquity. How many defilements and curses does it render? How much of an unruly evil full of its deadly poison can it muster? An unruly member with defiling passions can cause even the entire body to be intertwined in a web of sin. How remarkable and telling is Scripture of how man can tame every kind of beast, yet men cannot tame their tongues.

It was Solomon who said suffer not thy mouth to cause the flesh to sin. (Eccl.5:6) Therefore, pray for a holy language and effectual words. Desire a tongue that heaven can receive. Inconsistencies of a tongue that will bless God our Father and then the same tongue becomes vicious with cursing and slanderous words toward men should not be so.

Pray effectually and beseech God that your tongue becomes like that which is bridled. A tongue that will adhere entirely to the Spirit of God. A tongue that will reveal the wisdom, the character, and the integrity of God.
